Look closely at the image here and note that the surfaces of each piece of glass are painted in a wide range of dark tones. One of the most widespread forms of painting, stained glass inspired the lives of the faithful through religious narratives in churches and cloisters, celebrated family and political ties in city halls, and even decorated the windows of private houses. The term stained glass derives from the silver stain that was often applied to the side of the window that would face the outside of the building. When the glass was fired, the silver stain turned a yellow color that could range from lemon to gold. In an ideal restoration situation, a window and its components would be repaired on all sides at the same time. Because our house is in an historic district , any alterations made to the exterior of the house need to be approved in advance by the Architectural Review Commission. The first thing I did was take care of the aluminum storm window. As much as I would LOVE to ditch them and bask in the beauty of exposed sash windows, the reality is that we need them. Our house has year-old single-pane windows and no insulation, and we get a lot of precipitation in the Northeast.

In any artistic medium there is an art to designing projects, and a craft to bringing off that aim at the highest level. There is an art to designing a stained glass window, just as there is a craft to laying down paint on a canvas.
Stained glass, throughout its history, has been elevated to the realm of fine art and plunged into the obscurity of everyday architectural decoration. Currently, its reputation resides somewhere between these two extremes, having almost limitless potential to compete with other forms of fine art and fine craft, yet being kept from doing so in large part because of many non-professionals hobbyists seeking a vocation in either making or teaching stained glass, and thus diluting the medium with shoddy craftsmanship and non-original design.
Fine craft refers to the best that can be achieved within any craft medium, and is invariably a balance between artistic expression and superlative technique. I do not mean to imply that there is no good stained glass about, only that it seems to be a pyramid with some at the top both well designed and well crafted, and a lot more below missing one or both of those qualities. And while every medium has its place for fledgling artisans who are still struggling with becoming good at either the design process or the craft itself, not every medium has been swamped with so many “professionals” who are in business long before they have mastered the craft.
It is my hope to be of help to both consumers and stained glass artists when I speak out about the need for a higher standard of design and craftsmanship in this medium as a whole. If you’re thinking of having a stained glass or beveled glass artwork made, you may be seeking out glass artists on the Internet or getting quotes from artists or studios that are in your locality. Whatever you do, proceed carefully! The two major pitfalls you’ll want to be on the lookout for are poor craftsmanship and poor design!

Contact Introduction There are many good reasons for the student to study the history of stained glass; first, to truly excel, the student should be aware of the romance of the medium. Second, an appreciation of the history of stained glass will foster a dispassionate, critical approach in the student when appraising stained glass. The student of stained glass is urged to approach the medium with an informed, non-prejudiced understanding of the various styles to be encountered.
There are many excellent resources available for the study of stained glass and the student is urged to acquire a library of reference books that illustrate and describe specific installations in detail. However, there is no substitute for actually viewing stained glass in situ; that is, in its architectural surroundings.

Because this volume is intended as a reference of techniques for the stained glass artist and not as a history of the craft, this chapter should serve only as a starting point for the student who wishes to develop a deeper appreciation of the history of craft.

Joan of Arc, St. Only then did Bunyard realize that almost all the people depicted in the warm colors of red, blue, and gold were women – saints who burned at a stake, wiped the face of their savior, or languished in jail for refusing to relinquish their virtue. Inspired, the Rosemont senior joined a project whose aim is not only to study the 20 women in the windows, but to recount how their images wound up at Rosemont’s Immaculate Conception Chapel in what experts say is a rare example of a woman-centric collection of saints in stained glass.
Bunyard and 13 other students are participating in a digital humanities project that is chronicling the construction of the chapel built in by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, the religious community that founded the school as a women’s college in Rosemont is now coed. Depicting female saints in stained glass was an early part of the chapel plan, first spearheaded more than 75 years ago by Mother Mary Ignatius Carroll, the school’s second president.
The school will chronicle that project on a website. For more than a decade, the church community raised funds to build a chapel. In , the Vatican approved the project, but Carroll did not live to see it. She died that year during a return voyage from Rome.
